TRIO NO MAS

....is a churnin’ ‘n’ burnin’ muthasucka, Muthasuckas!

Mars Williams - Saxophones, Toys & Little Instruments

Aaron Gonzalez - Bass

Stefan Gonzalez - Drums

Stefan first encountered Mars on a record where they never even crossed paths in the studio, A Mother’s Work Is Never Done, the auspiciously poppin’ ass debut by The Young Mothers. This was followed, in the flesh, in January 2014, when TYM ventured up Chicago way to share the bill with classic prankster punk jazzers NRG Ensemble, of which Mars, of course is a notable alumnus.  Mars sat in with the youthful matriarchs, solidifying a joyful, energetic musical camaraderie.

Flash forward to 2018 when Los Hermanos Gonzalez were in New Orleans on a mission towards recording a new album with the Texan/Portuguese monster known as Humanization 4tet.
Mars surprised the intrepid combo with his presence, and sat in on the very wild second set of a particular show. The full on Mars/Gonzalez bond finally solidified.

So, the next year, when Psychedelic Furs rolled through the Gonzalez home base of Dallas on their tour, Mars extended the brothers an invitation to their show. While hanging and shooting the shit at said show, it was discovered/discussed that Mars had a night off the next night, in Dallas; a Monday night. It just so happens that the Gonzalez’s hosted an eclectic avant-garde music night in Dallas on Mondays, the exciting and unpredictable Outward Bound Mixtape Sessions. So they invited Mars on to do a trio set, called up their trusty live recording wizard Michael Briggs to do a last minute session, and the band was born!

They delivered a hair-raisingly raucous free jazz onslaught that was rather well received by the hungry audience. But they thought maybe they could do a little better. So Mars came down again a little over a month later, this time with some tunes, and blew away the Outward Bound audience yet again; all spit and swagger and macho anarchy. Hell, there were some sweet and tender moments, too.

Here’s a little slice of that fire for you. Let's hope it is the beginning of a great conflagration.
